Primary schools in Douala VI Municipality face significant challenges related to inadequate water supply, poor sanitation, and limited hygiene facilities. Many schools lack sufficient, gender-sensitive toilet facilities, which lead to overcrowding, unhygienic conditions, and higher risks of waterborne diseases. This situation affects pupils' health, attendance, and overall learning environment, particularly for girls, who are disproportionately impacted by the lack of proper sanitation. The absence of clean water further exacerbates hygiene issues, making it difficult for students to practice basic health habits such as hand washing.

Moreover, there is a general lack of awareness among pupils and school staff regarding the importance of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices. Without adequate knowledge and proper facilities, schools struggle to maintain sanitary environments, contributing to the spread of diseases and reducing the overall well-being of children. The need for comprehensive WASH interventions—improving infrastructure, ensuring clean water access, and enhancing hygiene education—remains critical to fostering a healthy and productive learning environment in these schools

General Objective:

To improve water supply, sanitation, and hygiene conditions in five primary schools within Douala VI by constructing modern toilet facilities, upgrading water supply systems, and assessing and improving pupils' understanding of WASH services through pre- and post-tests.

Specific Objectives:

  1. To construct safe, gender-sensitive toilet facilities in five primary schools in Douala VI Municipality.
  2. To upgrade or install reliable water supply systems in each school.
  3. To conduct pre- and post-tests to evaluate pupils' knowledge of WASH services before and after project implementation.
  4. To educate pupils, teachers, and staff on the importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene for better health outcomes and disease prevention.
  5. To establish sustainable maintenance protocols for the new WASH facilities.

Goals:

  • Enhance access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities in selected schools.
  • Increase awareness of hygiene practices and the importance of WASH services among pupils and school staff.
  • Foster healthier learning environments that promote better academic performance.

Scope:

  • Geographical Scope: Five primary schools in Douala VI Municipality.
